World Cup Final lowdown: G&T 5-3 VCCP
The one that went the distance
Seven weeks of football and it all came down to this. The Secta World Cup Final. Gardiner & Theobald LLP versus VCCP, under the lights at Aldgate. Two teams that dismantled everyone in their path, with two semi-final performances that were testament to their class. Only one walks away with the trophy.
G&T came flying out of the blocks, shots raining in from the first whistle. They had won every group game. They had put 11 past King Henry Studios in the semis. This was a team that knew what it was doing.
VCCP did not flinch. Jordain and Zac were straight into their groove, linking up down the flanks like they had been doing all tournament.
Two goals up, and nowhere near safe
Jamie broke the deadlock for G&T with a lovely through ball slotted home. Luca, Thomas and Jamie kept combining but could not find the second. Why? Daniel. The VCCP keeper stood tall, denying everything G&T threw at him.
James doubled the lead. 2-0 at half time, G&T zonal, organised, in control. Edward was doing his bit at the other end. Ayo kept testing him. Edward kept saying no.
Then VCCP found another gear. Jordain started pulling strings with through balls to Nathan, cutting out passes, driving VCCP forward. Zac made runs off the ball. Daniel kept them in it with save after save.
Nick pulled one back. 2-1, and VCCP believed. Nick went close again. Then Zac missed a golden sitter, and Luca punished it at the other end with an absolutely sensational strike. 3-1. Surely done.
Not even close
Jordain fired in to make it 3-2. End to end. Nerves everywhere. And then, in the dying embers, VCCP won a penalty.
Jordain. Top right corner. Ice cold. 3-3. The Secta World Cup final goes to extra time.
Five minutes to settle it, and G&T struck almost immediately. Who else other than Jamie for the finish, the man for the big moments all tournament. 4-3.
Edward produced one more huge save to deny Zac's leveller. Tom stepped up from the spot to make it five. The clock ran out. G&T 5-3 VCCP.
Champions of everything
Property League champions. World Cup champions. G&T have won it all.
Jamie Armstrong takes Player of the Match, with a goal in normal time, another in extra time, and the calm head that kept finding the net when it mattered most.
